Don’t Be Afraid of Local Politics

We support engaged citizens who are considering running for local office. We organize training sessions for them and connect them to town councilors and mayors. We give them small community grants. We educate fledgling councilors and young people who want to do something for their communities. We work with the media to share best practices by civic initiatives forging paths into local politics.

WHY DO WE SUPPORT ENGAGED CITIZENS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN LOCAL POLITICS?

At Via Foundation, we believe that in order for towns and cities to work well, engaged citizens, including “shakers and movers”, need to be involved. People can enliven and improve communities both by organizing community events and by running for office.

According to recent surveys, 45% of people in the Czech Republic do not believe they have any chance of addressing problems in their town or city. Through the program Don’t Be Afraid of Local Politics, we want to help more people understand that they can play a role in their community’s governance.

BY THE NEXT MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS IN 2022, WE WILL:

  • Prepare 40 engaged citizens from at least 30 municipalities across the Czech Republic to take on roles as municipal politicians.

  • Disseminate information about how people can get involved in local politics by supporting 50 events in different parts of the Czech Republic.

  • Inform the public about how municipal politics work. We will work on outreach and share best practices by civic initiatives working on the municipal level.

HOW WILL WE REACH THESE GOALS?

  • We will carry out 3 rounds of training and mentoring for engaged citizens.

  • We will provide educational opportunities for fledgling councilors and young people interested in municipal politics in collaboration with a partnering organization, Mladí občané.

  • We will work with the media to share specific examples of people who began in civic initiatives and went on to serve on town councils and/or mayors. We have launched a series of articles about civic inititatives on Aktuálně.cz which you can read (in Czech) HERE.
