Our mission is to increase citizen engagement in community affairs and to encourage philanthropy in the Czech Republic. We call these two branches of our work “the art of engaging” and “the art of giving”. In practical terms, this means that we devote our energy and expertise to growing the number of people in the Czech Republic caring and working collaboratively to improve their communities, giving to help others and trusting others. To make this happen we focus on:
Community Development: The Art of Engaging in Community
Via Foundation seeks out, connects and supports people who are changing their communities for the better by e.g. revitalizing public spaces, restoring neglected small monuments or organizing neighborhood gatherings. They may include individuals, groups of people, non-profit organizations, companies, municipalities and church and community organizations, Through their community projects they learn to work together for the good of the community, develop strong ties to their neighbors and build a sense of commitment to their communities. We provide grants, project consultations, mentoring and learning opportunities.
Philanthropy Development: The Art of Giving
In philanthropy development, our goal is to make giving, charity and generosity a regular part of life in the Czech Republic. We raise awareness about philanthropy and recognize outstanding philanthropists, offer young people an opportunity to experience philanthropy first-hand by designing and running their own charity events, and develop on-line giving tools.
Our vision is a society in which people act freely and courageously, accept responsibility for themselves and their community, and where giving is a regular part of life.
Freedom, meaningfulness, responsibility
VIA Foundation was established in 1997 to build on the work of the Czech office of the American Foundation for a Civil Society, which had operated in the country since 1990. For the past 22 years, we have been supporting people working together and giving back to improve their communities. Today we are one of the largest and most active Czech foundations supporting community development in the Czech Republic.
We have supported over 4,700 community projects since our founding. What does that look like year by year?
In 2018, for example, we:
supported 371 community projects in the Czech Republic and 96 in other parts of Europe
awarded grants in a total amount exceeding $684,000 (CZK 15.4 million)
distributed 22,478 copies of our philanthropy journal, the Art of Giving
helped almost 500 non-profit organizations receive gifts totalling $3,776,000 (CZK 85 million) through our Darujme.cz online giving tool
THE VIA FAMILY
We have also gradually grown from a single organization to the Via family of affiliated organizations, which is made up of Via Foundation and three other non-profit organizations organizations which complement our work:
Since 2005 Friends of Via in Pittsburgh has been faciliating giving for American donors of Czech charitable projects.
Via civic association in Prague has been providing technical support to Czech non-profit organizations since 2005.
In 2016 we co-founded Via Clarita, which provides philanthropy advisory services to Czech donors.
